EAR 834 Integrated Amp. EAR products are the stuff audio dreams are made of. Their scarcity insures that they are more often talked about than heard. The EAR 834P phono preamp utilizes 3 tubes in an MM/MC switchable design with optional volume control for high end sound and look.

EAR 834P First impressions. I had thought that I was getting a second hand unit but in fact got a new unit that had been on display. As seen in the picture it is the Deluxe model with Chrome Face Plate and Gold Plated on/off Switch. This Phono stage is certainly impressive to look. It is solid heavy and has Bling.

Albums used Michael Franks - Birchfield Nines. Warner Bros Joe Pass and Ella Fitzgerald - Speak Low. Pablo After Michael Franks I was no nearer than I had been before, surly Ella would come to my rescue. Put the Album on using the Project and Ella stepped into my Living room and sang to me. At last a winner.

Every album played sounded as good as the next. I could find no fault with it. I have already described, in the Project RS Review, each album and that description remains for the EAR. Now here is my problem. For the love of me I could not choose between them. They both sounded wonderful. I was truly stumped.

There's scope for swapping types as well as just brands. I found I got the best results with mine with a GE 5751 in the gain stage (back position) a Sovtek 12AX7 LPS in the centre position and a RCA 5814A in the cathode follower position (front). Really moves it up into a whole different ballpark to my ears, though always keep the middle tube as an ECC83/12AX7 as it's responsible for the RIAA curve.

The EAR 834P phono preamp utilizes 3 tubes in an MM/MC switchable design with optional volume control for high end sound and look. This instruction manual has been written to help you get the best from your new EAR amplifier. The EAR 864 has been designed to meet a wide variety of needs.

Good evening all, I just rec'd a slightly used Ear 834p off of Audiogon and have a couple of questions. It didn't come with a manual so I was curious if there was a place online that might have a 'downloadable' version. I did a google search and looked at the vinyl engine website. I'm not a member there though so I used their basic search and couldn't find one. I have another question regarding the unit itself. This is my first tube component and I noticed (at least I think) the sound improving as the unit warmed up. My question is how long should I let the unit warm up before I start my listening session?

Serial number of units reviewed: 0911596 (auditioning), 97081016 (measuring). Price: $895–$1295 (1997–2003). Approximate number of dealers: 9. Manufacturer: Esoteric Audio Research, Huntingdon, UK.

I've found that many people enjoy the mods they have had done, but I'm not really up for dropping a whole bunch of money for something I might not even be able to notice. This is such a nice unit to begin with! I plan on doing a lot of research on line so I can understand how tubes work etc. 834P Questions Hi Ray, The 834P comes from the factory with JJ ecc83 or 12ax7 tubes. They are individually triode-matched in the UK before they go into a given unit.

Have never heard it sound just OK. Well needless to say both Phono Stages handled it superbly. I was still Stuck without any clear indication of which to choose so I asked my neighbor to come up and listen for a while.

I also plan on taking off the top and seeing what tubes are in the thing. I had to jump on the price without asking too many questions up front and rely on the guy's positive feedback. Oh btw vinylreview, I love your vinyl reviews! I took the lid off and noticed there are 3 Sovtek 12AX7LP tubes. I assume these were probably the original tubes in the unit. Lets say down the road I do the same tubes as you with the 12AX7LP type in the front and the 5751 in the back, which brand would you recommend?

When first launched, it was the only valve phono stage you could buy with facilities for both good quality Moving Coil (MC) and Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges. In addition, for a small premium the unit could be purchased with an in-built volume control, allowing direct connection to a power-amplifier. Variations of the 834PEAR-Yoshino 834P MM uses the same circuit architecture as its more expensive brothers, and shares in the same high quality sound through MM type cartridges. It is enclosed in a tough, black coloured, rigid metal case, and is fully “CE” type approved. EAR-Yoshino 834P Signature (MM/MC) builds on the classic EAR 834P specification, by adding a superb Moving Coil (MC) input stage, as well as the option of a high quality volume control.

Click to expand. Better tubes might well improve the EAR or may not, it would sound different yes but better, I will never know. For the extra $1500 that the EAR would have cost (more if you start adding extra tubes), I bought a Grado Statement Reference Cartridge which will give me a much bigger boost in SQ than tube rolling in the EAR.

Maybe he would hear something I was missing. Choose the Album Carmel by Joe Sample to play for him because he is familiar with it. First played the Project and then the EAR. My neighbor is not an Audiophile just someone who appreciates good music.

Using three ECC88s to create smooth sound. Luxurious design with chrome facia and gold or chrome knobs. Connect up to five analogue line inputs with a tape output. Three ECC83 Valves Five Analogue inputs (RCA) One Analogue Output (RCA) One Tape Out (RCA) Volume control Chrome Facia with gold or chrome knobs • • • Integrated Amps • EAR 834 Push-pull stereo integrated amplifier.

50 Watts/Channel Eight EL34s Two ECC85 Valves Two ECC83 Valves Chrome Facia • EAR 890 Push-pull power amplifier using eight KT90 output valves (four per channel). 70 Watts per channel stereo (bridgeable to 140 watts mono) into 4, 8, or 16 ohms.

Taking advantage of them could be as simple as purchasing a balanced tonearm lead providing the single ended outputs on the phono stage can be used in conjunction with the balanced inputs or your pre or integrated has balanced inputs. The one thing that I would strongly recommend (as the owner of a fully balanced phono stage) you look into, especially when you upgrade to the lower output Grado, is using the balanced inputs on the Project. Not only would the 56 dB gain setting using the balanced inputs be ideal (using the balanced in with your MM would be less than ideal IMO but you did not seem to have an issue with even more gain than they would provide when you were using the 50 dB gain setting), chances are the phono stage would provide even better performance than you're experiencing now.

I also Covered the 2 units so that he could not see which was which. After I changed from the RS to the EAR he only had one thing to say 'Are you sure you switched them' He couldn't tell them apart either. I have already said what I liked and disliked about the Phono Box RS.

Manual

Is this a 12AX7? Can I drop-in another 12AX7 TIA. Lito senior member Posts: 586 Images: Joined: 05 Jan 2005 18:40 Location: Makati, Phil. Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but you might try a set of 5751 valves. I've found them to work very well, better than Mullard ECC83 in the EAR phono stage. A military-spec valve, they are a drop-in replacement for the ECC83 but with less gain.

I'll email them directly and get a manual. I just got the thing so I don't have a solid feel for its performance just yet. I put two albums on and didn't notice any real improvements over my Clearaudio Nano. To be honest though, I really like the music on those albums but not the mastering.

MC Loading is 450 ohms and gain fixed at 72 dB. I had spent a few hours listening (not critically) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to allow the unit a little burn in time. Left the unit on over night last night so that it would be fully warmed up this morning. Albums used for evaluation were.

I replaced these. The problem is the tube at V3. It has a different construction vs the other two.

Joe Sample - Carmel - Regular Pressing David Qualey - Soliloquy -Windham Hill Santana - Abraxas - Mobile Fidelity Limited Edition Intensive Care – Discwasher Analog Recording Pressed in Japan Carl Orff- Carmina Burana, Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra- Hi-Q Supercuts Protocol was the same as before first played the full album using the EAR and then replayed the same album using the Phono Box RS. Did this with each album. As I have fully talked about the RS I will talk only about the EAR and then give my conclusions and yes I have made a choice.

Time has passed, and that interest is gone. Picking up an older used version without the built-in step-up transformers would be the way to go IMHO, and a lot cheaper.

So how did the EAR sound. In one word Wonderful. Rich, full bodied exciting.

For the cost of the EAR I can get the Phono Box RS a new Grado Statement Reference Cartridge and still have change for Projects alignment tool. All of which I will be getting. I would just like to add, there is often the status appeal of owning a certain piece of gear. Project is not known to be 'Hi End' in the Audiophile world so it is easy to discount as being mediocre even without listening to it. So thanks for indulging me. It has been an interesting 10 days, sometimes frustrating but always fun.

The very best I've found is the black plate RCA 'command', a thick-glass 3-mica 1960's one that's now rather expensive and scarce but superb. I sold mine (for much more than I paid for them) after I sold the Ear phono stage and I've regretted it ever since. My second choice is 3-mica Tungsols of the same vintage, another great valve. To try the 5751 out without spending too much, look for the Philips JAN version, much cheaper but pretty good. Senior member Posts: 853 Images: Joined: 13 Mar 2008 12:04 Location: Kent, UK •.

I then played her through the EAR and Ella Stepped into my living room and sang to me. Back to my dilemma. How do I pick one of these fine Phono Stages. Time for one last album. Gerry Murads Harmonicats - Peg O' My Heart. This album is full of rich complex sounds and Harmonics. It either sounds wonderful or terrible.

It is a Ferrari to Projects Renault (Looks wise). It is slightly noisier than the Project but only marginally so. The unit came without a Manual so I cannot comment on that however it is basically plug and play so no Manual is needed. Setting options are MM 47K Ohm loading 200Pico Farad Capacitance with gain fixed at 55dB.

So, having lived with seven or so different quads of EL34s over many years, to my ears, the KT88 design does a better job of presenting balanced sound top to bottom. I have not tried any NOS EL34s, however, so my experience is limited. To date, my best method of comparison to use a combination of pink noise and test tones, comparing, a signal off my phono pre to room sound. I generally weigh this against an anecdotal impression of repeatedly listening to the same recordings, and noting which details are present and/or not present given certain configurations. That said, I think FuzzMeasure Pro is a pretty decent bit of software. It's well worth having a good search on Audio Asylum regarding the 834P, lots of very interesting tube-rolling options there, e.g.

I guess I was seeing if it colored the sound on less than great recordings. I don't think it does. I then put an album that I recently picked up that I knew had a pretty great analog sound. Other than hearing many pops (I haven't cleaned it with the rcm yet), it sounded great to my ears. I plan on doing more listening tonight and just playing the albums with good sound.

I started getting the impression that the 834p paints a little broader picture than my other stages. A little bit more in the highs and lows come through with the music. To me it also seems to play at a higher volume than I would have expected. I think I also notice a little better soundstage.

My choice of gain tube (5751) was partly down to using a very high output cart (an Ortofon 2M Black), though I'd highly recommend trying the best 12AU7 type you can find in the front cathode follower position (my favourite 12AU7s are 5814As!). Also be aware that this phono stage is remarkably sensitive to the loading of the input on the preamp, especially with a 12AX7 type in the cathode follower position. Pay very close attention to cable capacitance etc and try to make sure it sees 100 KOhm or more at the preamp, otherwise it sounds rather sat-on and non-special IME.
